Master Lanzhou CBD

Located in the heart of Melbourne’s CBD—between Melbourne Central and Chinatown—this tenancy introduces an acclaimed Lanzhou-origin brand renowned for authentic Chinese beef noodles. s2dio-X was appointed as Architect for the project, with a brief to undertake a change-of-use and transform an existing two-storey retail shop into a youthful, contemporary dining venue.

The design concept is informed by the fusion of broader Eastern cultural references and is expressed through the integration of traditional Chinese architectural principles with modern materials and detailing. An introverted, Zen-like calm forms the point of departure: a composed spatial sequence that prioritises balance, restraint, and atmosphere. Within this framework, heritage cues—such as layered thresholds, rhythm, and proportion—are reinterpreted in a contemporary manner, allowing new interventions to sit comfortably alongside tradition. The result is a space that maintains the charm of classical Chinese spatial structure while presenting a modern simplicity and elegance—quietly refined, yet rich in character and spirit.
